The Legend Behind the Month of Shravan

According to ancient legends, the month of Shravan holds great significance due to the Samudra Manthan, or the churning of the ocean. This monumental event was a joint effort by the Gods (Devatas) and Demons (Danvas). They used the mighty Sumeru Mountain as a churning rod and the snake Vasuki, who coils around Lord Shiva’s neck, as the churning rope. As they churned the ocean, countless priceless gems emerged. However, a deadly poison named Halahal also surfaced, threatening to destroy everything.

Neither the Gods nor the Demons could handle the potent poison. It was Lord Shiva who came to the rescue, drinking the entire poison and holding it in his throat, which turned blue as a result. This earned him the name Neel Kanth, meaning Blue Throat. By doing so, Lord Shiva saved everyone, making the month of Shravan incredibly auspicious and revered.

Activities for the Month of Shravan

The month of Shravan is a holy period, and by following certain practices, devotees can seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. Here are some important activities to consider:

  1. Daily Fasting and Temple Visits: Ideally, devotees should fast every day during the month of Shravan. After bathing, visit a Lord Shiva temple daily and offer Panchamrut (a mixture of milk, curd, ghee, honey, and Gangajal) along with Bilva leaves. During the fast, you can consume milk, milk-based items, fruits, and other fasting-approved foods while praying to Lord Shiva.

  2. Monday Fasting: If daily fasting is not possible, ensure to fast every Monday of Shravan, as Mondays are especially sacred.

  3. Wearing Rudraksha: Adorning oneself with a Rudraksha bead during this month is considered highly auspicious.

  4. Reciting Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra: Chant the powerful Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra as many times as possible for protection and blessings.

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra

Om Trayambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushti Vardhanam
Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat

By observing these practices, devotees can honour Lord Shiva and receive his divine blessings throughout the auspicious month of Shravan.
