Nag Panchami is commenced with the Nag Chaturthi, which is followed by the Panchami and Shashti. The Nag Chaturthi has other name also like Nagula Chavithi or Chauth. Women observe the fast on this day in order to get happiness for their children; it is believed that Nag Chauth provides protection from evils to children. The Nag Panchami comes in the Shravan maas, in ‘shukla paksh’ time period. Nag Panchami is popular with other names also like Bhratru Panchami, Nagavardhini Panchami, Bishari Puja, etc.

As per the Mahabharata, Janamejaya who was the son of Parikshit, was performing the rituals to take revenge of his father’s death which was known as Sarpa Satra. He wanted to take revenge with the king of snakes Taksaka because his father died due to snake bite. But Taksaka escaped from the power of Sarpa Satra and went to Indralok. That time other Gods prayed to Manasa Devi to save Taksaka. She sent her son to save Takasaka. Her son at last convinced Janamejaya and that helped in saving Takasaka and also the Indralok.
The lord Krishana and Kaaliya snakes’s story is also famous in which Krisha defeated the big snake – Kaaliya.
Nag Panchami 2024: Celebration of 2024 Nag Panchmi
On the occasion of Nag Panchmi, a snake is formed by cow dung and placed at main door of home. On the day of Nag panchami the snake is worshipped as a God. People offer Kusha grass, Akshat, Milk and Sandalwood to the snake. The God snake is firstly bathed with milk, and it is believed that it helps in releasing one from sins.
In the areas of West Bengal, Orissa and Assam devotees worship Goddess Manasa on the day of Nag Panchami. At some places like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra etc. people worship Sheshnag. In 2024 Nag Panchami will be celebrated in different areas of country in different manners, but overall style of celebration of this day remains the same.
On the auspicious occasion of Nag Panchami, houses are well cleaned and prepared holy offerings for snake. In some areas of India, preparation of Nag Panchami is done one day prior of festival. A holy offering of snake includes rice items, sevai, Laddoo etc.
A special puja for deity snake is performed, in which nag is bathed with mixture of milk, sugar, butter, honey and yogurt i.e. Panchamrit. After completing these proceedings, people performed aarti to get the blessings of deity snake. And mantras of Nag Panchami are chanted throughout this day.
A puja of Kal Sarpa Niwaran is held at many temples on the occasion of Nag Panchami. It is one of the most essential rituals of this auspicious day, it acts as a medicine for the people who are affected with the dosha of Kal Sarpa. Worshipping of snakes is Chamatkarpur and it assists in fulfilment of all the wishes, according to Skanda Purana.
