What is the Festival of Akshaya Tritiya?
The festival and occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, which is also known as Akha Teej, is observed on the 3rd day (or Tithi) of the Shukla Paksha in the Hindu calendar month of Vaishakha. The meaning of the word Akshaya in Sanskrit is never diminishing. The Akshaya Tritiya is one of the 4 most auspicious days as per the Hindu Calendar. On the day, devotees purchase things like jewellery and property. They also start new businesses on this very day. The day is also considered auspicious for any good event like marriage as it holds the Shubh Muhurta. It possesses the Saava, where people get together in bliss.
Why is the day significant?
This day, in particular, marks the birth of Lord Almighty Parshurama. He is of course the 6th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is understood that on the very day, Sage Ved Vyasa and God Ganesha started writing and noting the Mahabharata. The day is also sacred for Janis, as their first Tirthankara, Almighty Rishabhdeva, on this day, finished his fast by consuming sugarcane juice. Followers pray to Devi Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu on the day. Here are the steps for the puja:
- On the auspicious festival of Akshaya Tritiya, one must get up very early and take a bath in the Ganga Jal or holy water.
- After the bath, the follower must put the idols of Laxmi and Vishnu in the Puja Sthaan and offer them rice grains, roli, dhoop, sandalwood, etc.
- After the puja is done, 1 must clean the idols with Punchamrit and give them Sattu, Jowar, Channa, Cucumber and Tulsi patta.
- Right at the end, one has to sing God Vishnu’s own aarti and charity things to the poor and the sages. You can give things like fruits, milk, utensils, milk, curd, rice and others.
