Importance of Shani Pradosh pooja

Pradosh is also known as Pradosham Vratam and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Pradosh occurs twice in a month and falls on 13th day of lunar fortnight. If this Pradosh falls on Saturday then it is called as Shani Pradosh. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shani is supposed to create problems in the life of an individual. By observing the fast and offering prayers to Lord Shani people can escape from all the sufferings in the life.

How to do Shani Pradosh pooja

Devotee should get up early in the morning and take the bath and should recite the mantra “Om Namah Shivaya” for the entire day. One hour before the sunset again the bath needs to be taken and the devotee should wear the clothes that are meant for pooja. Lord Shiva should be worshipped by placing the idol on the Mandap which should be kept in the North-East corner of the house. After worshipping Lord Shiva, Shani Pradosh Vrat Katha is being read and after the completion of Katha Prasad is being offered to every member of the house.  It is also believed that Bilva leaves can be offered to Lord Shani Bhagwan temple and after the archana some of the leaves can be asked to bring home. These leaves can be put in the cash box to maintain the money consistently in the house.

To overcome the dread effects of Lord Shani people do all the pooja to remove the adverse effects from the life. Fast is being kept from sunrise to sunset and ends with evening pooja. The word pradosha itself means, the period just before sunset and after sunset. The prayer is done 1.5 hours before sunset and 1 hour after sunset. Devotees either keep the strict fast or the partial fast and do the prayer in the evening and break the fast with the Prasad. Devotees commence the proper eating of food from the next day of Shani Pradosh. People also visit Shiva temples to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.
