Legend of Kumbh Mela: Kumbh Mela 2015

The word Kumbh means ‘pot’. It belongs to the pot of elixir (Amrit), that emerged out from ocean of milk (kshira Sagar). Kumbh Mela is measured as most promising time of India. The Kumbh Mela starts from the time when devatas (gods) and Asuras (demons) reside on earth. A curse influence Devtas and aroused fear in them that ultimately made them coward and weak. Lord Brahma the creator of universe advised to Devtas to churn the ocean to get the Amrit of immortality. The king of serpents Vasuki was used as rope and the Mandara Mountain as churning rod to churn the milky ocean. Kumbh was the pitcher that consist immortality nectar and was gain from Samudramanthan.

Devats asked demons for help in completing this sturdy task with mutual accord of sharing the nectar of immortality equally. Gods were holding Vasuki’s tail and demons were holding its head to churn the milky ocean. After this complete process of ocean churning finally lord Dhanwantri appeared with pitcher (kumbh) in his hand. God Brhaspati, Shani, Surya and Chandra are entrusted for the safety of the nectar of immortality from demons. When the demons learned about the conspiracy of Devtas they turned cruel and attack them. As, Devtas know that demons are more powerful than them and can defeat them easily they ran away from there with Kumbh to hide it and chased by demons.  Demons chased Gods for 12 days and 12 nights to posses the nectar of immortality. These 12 days of deities are equal to 12 years of humans. When the chase take place between Devtas and demons few drops of the nectar of immortality fall on these four places on earth Haridwar, Nashik, Ujjain and Allahabad.

Where some of stories are also there that tells us demons are chased by Gods and few drops of Amrit fall on these four places Allahabad, Nashik, Haridwar and Ujjain. Since that time Kumbh Mela is organised at these four places after the interval of 12 years. According to some mythology scriptures Devtas and Demons had war for continuous twelve days in sky for the possession of nectar of immortality. This the reason why Maha Kumbh Mela is organized or celebrate in every 12 years at these four places where drops of Kumbh fallen.

Kumbh Mela is the highly spiritual gathering of people from different corner of the globe where thousands of devotees takes scared dip in the holy water.

 Process for the observation of Kumbh Mela in 2015: Kumbh Mela 2015

 The main ceremony that will be held in Kumbh Mela of year 2015, is bathing in the holy water of Godavari. In year 2015 Kumbh Mela will organized in Nashik. Devotees in thousands of number will take holy dip in Godavari River to purify their souls and to reduce sins. Poor families and holy men (naga sanyasis) are welcomed and fed in religious assemblies.

The devotees of this observance period of Kumbh Mela arecalled as Kalpvasis and this period is known as Kalpvas. Most of the devotees avoid one time meal of the day. After taking scared dip Kalpvasis donate their belongings/bed to the priests (sanyasis). This ceremony is called as Saya Daan.
