Every month, Maha Shivratri falls on corresponding Chaturdashi night (according to Hindu Lunar Calendar, fourteenth day) according to Nirnaya Sindhu classical text. The Shivaratri in month of Magha is called as Maha Shivaratri.

About Shivaratri

Devotees keep Maha Shivrartri fast on the prior Maha Shivrartri night. According to Hindu calendar, the day may be Chaturdashi Tithi or Trayodashi Tithi. But one thing should be necessary to be considered is that the prior night Tithi should be Chaturdashi.

Devotees start fat prior to the day of Maha Shivaratri festival, according to Nirnaya Sindhu.  On this auspicious day devotees eat one time meal only and then worship on Chaturadashi night. On the next morning, devotees begin their day by bathing and perform Lord Shiva worship and observe fast for the whole day.

Maha Shivaratri festival is celebrated by offering some things like leaves of Bael to idol of Lord Shiva. Traditional celebration of Maha Shivaratri is followed by keeping vrat for the whole day. By performing this, devotees can enchant Shiva God on Maha Shivaratri. As per Hindu mythology this auspicious day is celebrated because on this day Lord shiva and Goddess Parvati got married.

Maha Shivaratri celebration starts in the early morning and continues till next morning. On this auspicious day, devotees of Lord Shiva visit temples and pray to Lord Shiva to take the blessings for good fortune and well-being.

The celebrations of Maha Shivaratri are considered as the symbol of spiritual passion and dedication. As per traditions, devotees who keep fast of Maha Shivaratri, they visit temple of lord Shiva in the early morning and worship Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. One of the important parts of this day is performing the Shiva Lingam bathing. On this auspicious day, devotees of Lord starts their fast of Maha Shivaratri by bathing Shiva Lingam with Honey, Milk, purified butter, Sugar, Kale Til, some fresh flowers and Gangal jal. After completing this, devotees put sandalwood paste (Chandan Tilak) with some rice on Shiva Lingam. And then, devotees offer some fruits and flowers on the Shivling. They end their process of worship after reading religious story (katha) and doing Parikarama.
