Maha Shivratri is being observed on the 14th day of dark fortnight in the month of Phalgun according to Hindu calendar which falls on the no moon day in month of February/March according to English calendar. Individuals who want to do the Shiv Pooja monthly are advised to start from the Maha Shivratri day and to continue for the whole year.

Maha Shivratri Chaturdashi Pooja
MahaShivratri Chaturdashi Pooja is being celebrated on the 14th day of dark fortnight of Phalgun Month. Maha shivratri is also known as Shiva Chaudas and the word itself has some significant meaning as Shiva means shav and Chaudas means fourteenth and is the prominent day for Shakti pooja. The day of Shiva Chaudas represents the day of spiritual enlightenment. A person who performs tantras learns the mantras on this day. Shiva Chaudas rituals were observed much before any Shiva pooja. People who believe in Shiva perform the rituals and offer Prasad to everyone to get rid of all evil energies. On this day some people also offer food to their forefathers by making Brahmans to eat food in the house. Maha Shivratri is celebrated to celebrate the marriage of Lord Shiva and Maa parvati by singing songs and hymns to praise Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Married and unmarried women keep fast on this day to get the life partner as of Lord Shiva and break their fast by taking Prasad in the next morning and doing aarti.
