Grahan 2015: Surya Grahan & Chandra Grahan

Most of the people believe that the intensity of Grahan is directly proportional to the sinister effects. Why it is believed that such a time is not suitable for the commencement of any auspicious work? Is the period really that malevolent? What are the precise solutions for it? This article is dedicated to the impact of eclipses in the year 2015 and their significance in your life.

In the year 2015, the solar eclipse will occur on the 20th of March 2015. The day of occurrence will be Friday. The lunar eclipses will occur on two days in the year 2015. First will of on the 4th of April, 2015 and the day will be Saturday. The next and the last lunar eclipse of the year 2015 will occur on the 27th of September, 2015.

What is the meaning of Grahan actually is?

An eclipse is an event during which a particular celestial object is overlapped by another celestial body. Please note that the eclipse could be full or partial depending on the characteristics of the astronomical event. When the three celestial bodies, Sun, Moon and the Earth are aligned in a straight line; there is a period when earth or moon falls among the rest of the two.  The period is called eclipse or rather the Grahan.

Solar Eclipse (Surya Grahan)

It is a phase in which the Moon reaches in between the Sun and the Earth and partially or completely obstructs the view of the sun.

There will only be one solar eclipse to be seen in India in the year 2015. It is due dated 20th of March 2015. It is worth mentioning that this eclipse will not be visible for the people of Chennai.

Lunar Eclipse (Chandra Grahan)

When the celestial body of the planet Earth comes in the perimeter of the Moon and the Sun aligned in the straight line. The period of Chandra Grahan always fall during the night of full moon.

First will of on the 4th of April, 2015 and the day will be Saturday. The next and the last lunar eclipse of the year 2015 will occur on the 27th of September, 2015.

The total duration of the eclipse that to held on Saturday, 4th of April 2015 will be 52 minutes and 34 seconds. The period of the partial phase of the Lunar Eclipse will be 3 hours, 27 minutes and 42 seconds. The period of the penumbral phase will be 5 hours, 55 minutes and 59 seconds.

The total duration of the lunar eclipse to be held on 27th of September, 2015 i.e. on Monday will be 1 hour 11 minutes and 8 seconds. The period of the partial phase of the eclipse will be 3 hours, 18 minutes and 43 seconds. The tenure of the penumbral phase of the eclipse will be 5 hours, 9 minutes and 7 seconds.

The legend behind eclipse

As per Hindu Mythology, Gods and Demons once integrated to bring out the elixir of immortality from beneath the ocean. Somehow, Gods improvised to secure the elixir from demons. The churned elixir from beneath the ocean was served to the gods, but a demon as an imposter to be a god tried to obtain the elixir of life. As he was between The Sun God and The Moon God, they knew the truth and Lord Vishnu instantly cut off his skull from his body. Regrettably, demon had already tasted a drop of the elixir and he became eternal. From that time, this demon ‘Rahu’ is believed to wreak vengeance, whenever the Sun and The Moon come near during the phase of transit.

Grahan Sutak (Ill-Fated Time)


What is Sutak all about?

The moment of Sutak or Sutak Kaal is believed to be the unfavorable time during Grahan (eclipse). Normally, it is advised that no promising work should be accomplished during this tenure. The duration of Sutak commences from 12 hours after the inception of Grahan. The Sutak phase ends when we take bathe subsequent to the Moksha (salvation) of Grahan.

Preventive measures to acquire during Sutak

As per Hindu mythology, there are certain rules that should be obeyed during the phase of Grahan Sutak:

  1. It is really advised to spend some time during this period in meditation.
  2. Please note that the Plant of Tulsi and idols of Gods ought not to be touched through this time.
  3. The recitation of Mantras should be done after lightning a wick lamp (Deepak)
  4. Cooking of food and consumption of it is forbidden during this time.
  5. Defecation or urination should be shunned during this time.
  6. Sexual contact & make up is forbidden during the phase of Sutak.
  7. The divine water of Ganga should be speckled all over the dwelling subsequent to the Moksha of Grahan.

Ladies who are expecting should take special care during the phase of Sutak. It is highly advisable not to expose yourself to the glimpse of eclipse. For the children, patients and old aged people, the terms of Sutak are not applicable.
