Festival of Bhai Dooj 2015

The festival of Bhai Dooj is considered to be the fifth day festival of Diwali celebrations. The Diwali is considered to be the five days festival period and the Bhai Dooj is the last day of that festival. In the year of 2015 this festival will be celebrated on 13th November 2015.This is the very important day for all the brothers and sisters as they meet on this day and celebrate the festival with full of enjoyment and fun. This day is the day which makes them to show the affection towards each other. On this the Lord Yam and goddess Yamuna is worshipped.

The Bhai Dooj is celebrated because of the significance it holds in the Indian history. On this day Lord Yam i.e. the lord of death visited his sister house Yamuna. The sister welcomed his brother with the ceremony of Aarti and then they had the lunch together. After leaving for the day Lord Yam blessed his sister will all the gifts and blessings. The other story related to this day is that the Lord Krishna killed Narakasur on this day and then went to his sister place Subhadra. The Subhadra also welcomed her brother like the Yamuna welcomed her brother. Therefore due to these stories, this day is celebrated as the day of brother and sister.

The main rituals that are performed on this day are:-

  1. Sisters invite their brothers at home on the Bhaiya Dooj.
  2. Brothers visit the sister’s place and then the sister applies the tilak on the forehead of the brother.
  3. Sisters need to prepare meal for their brother so that they can have it together. The name that is given to this meal is ‘Bhagini Hastha Bhojanam’.
  4. The Lord Yamraj is worshipped on this day.
  5. The holy dip on this day in river Yamuna is considered to be very auspicious.

The ritual for the Tilak on this day is different and is as follows:-

  1. You need to make your brother sit in the puja ghar.
  2. Need to apply the kumkum on the forehead of the brother as the mark or significance of protection.
  3. The coconut is then offered to him.
  4. The Aarti is performed and the prayers are being recited for the well-being of the brother and long life.
  5. The sweet is then offered after aarti.
  6. If your brother is married then the Tilak is applied at the forehead of Bhabhi also and the coconut is also given to her.
  7. Sisters who do not have brothers can perform the puja for Lord Moon.

The mantra that is being recited on this day is:-

Bhratus tabaa grajaataaham, Bhunksa bhaktamidam shuvam
Preetaye yama raajasya Yamunaah Visheshatah
