The festival of Dhanteras is celebrated two days prior of Diwali festival. People celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm, devotion and prosperity. This festival is celebrated in Maharashtra, Northern India and in Gujarat. This festival is dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari who is the doctor of all the Gods. The important ritual that is being performed on this day is the Lakshmi Puja done in the evening. There are no particular rituals followed on this day as the manner in which this festival is celebrated varies from region to region.
On this day people purchase or do shopping of the gold or silver things. This day is considered to be very favorable for all the new purchases or investments done. On this day people lit the first lamps of the Diwali festival. Lanterns are being decorated and are sold in the market to indicate the arrival of the Diwali festival.
This festival brings the bonding between the families and the spiritual knowledge is also gained. People gather at their ancestral homes and greet each other with great enthusiasm and prosperity. Parents and grandparents remain very excited as they get the chance to meet their children and grandchildren’s. During this occasion people make different type food or snacks, do the lightning in the whole house, draw the rangolis, prepare the sweets and then exchange with the family members or friends. In the evening aarti is performed and the devotional songs or shlokas are recited in order to make Goddess Lakshmi happy so that she can arrive at home and fill the home with wealth and prosperity. In the evening doors are kept open so that Goddess can arrive and can stay at the home.
The word Dhanteras is made up of two words – “Dhan” which means wealth and the “Teras” which means the thirteenth day. In the North region of India, it is a custom to buy precious metals like gold and silver utensils in order to maintain wealth and prosperity in their whole life. They also consider these shopping as the sign of good fortune. In other regions of India, people take bath early morning and wear new clothes and keep fasts for the whole day. This year the Dhanteras will fall on 21st October, 2014 and the good Mahurat to do the Dhanters Puja is from 19:04 P.M. to 20:15 P.M. On Dhanteras the best time to do the Lakshmi Puja is during the Pradosh Kaal when Sthir Lagna prevails. Puja done during this time will make the Goddess to stay in the house.
